Over the course of three semesters, the Visions of Sustainability project screening nine solution-oriented documentary films on the three ecological sustainability themes of the ICN – climate protection, resources, and well-being – in the public setting of the Harmony Kino in Freiburg and in conjunction with expert discussions and related excursions and practical workshops at the Volkshochschule Freiburg. Below are is an overview of the films we showed in each of the three semesters. Our third film series was dedicated to the topic of “well-being” — another research focus of the Innovation Campus Sustainability. The two selected documentaries from the Netherlands and Germany show the positive effects of cycling on people and their cities and what it can mean when humans and (farm) animals are allowed to live together in peace without violence.

Our second film series at Harmonie Kino Freiburg with its further excursions and workshops was dedicated to resources and resource conservation in the areas of agriculture, urban areas and the energy sector. It is also about which innovative economic systems can enable the transition to a more sustainable and fairer society. The three selected documentaries from Germany, France and Sweden show different ways to use our vital resources more sustainably.

Our first film series was dedicated to the topics of climate protection, climate mitigation, and climate adaptation as well as the feelings of anger, fear, powerlessness and sadness that many of us feel in the face of the climate crisis and the intergenerational conflicts that need to be addressed and overcome. Our four selected films from Germany, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands take very different approaches to the topic and shed light on social, psychological, technical, and legal ways of dealing with the climate crisis in more sustainable ways.
