The established Harmonie Arthaus Kino shows film art for young and old in all its shades. With its award-winning program, the arthouse movie theater qualifies for membership of the Europa Cinemas film theatre association thanks to the high proportion of non-national European films.
For the Visions of Sustainability research project, the Harmonie Arthaus was the local implementation partner for our regular film screenings with expert discussions. With its comfortable seating and excellent image and sound, the communal space at this local arthouse movie theater was an important thinking and discussion space for a lively exchange with the people who came to see our films.
Volkshochschule Freiburg
The adult education center Volkshochschule Freiburg (vhs) is a central element in the cultural and social life of the city of Freiburg. In addition to its wide range of general, political, ecological, vocational and cultural education programmes, the vhs also sees itself as a place of art, culture and encounters with the task of breaking down barriers to participation in further education and social life.
Together with the Volkshochschule Freiburg, the research team of the Visions of Sustainability project put together a participatory program to accompany the film series. In its endeavors to develop innovative educational concepts, the vhs was an ideal implementation partner for our project.
Greenmotions Filmfestival
The Greenmotions Film Festival has been held annually at the Kommunales Kino Freiburg since 2016. Solution-oriented films on the topics of the environment and sustainability are presented and workshops and film discussions are organised. Founded in 2014 by a group of graduate students at the University of Freiburg, the Greenmotions film festival has become a permanent fixture in Freiburg’s film and festival landscape.
The Greenmotions team collaborated with the Visions of Sustainability research team in the film selection process. Together, our aim was not only to conduct research, but also to open eyes, raise awareness and inspire changes in behaviour.

Bürgermeisterin Christine Buchheit
It was a great honor for the project that the Mayor of Freiburg, Christine Buchheit, took on the patronage of Visions of Sustainability during its runtime.
Christine Buchheit has been Mayor for the Environment with Forestry and Waste Management, Youth, Schools and Education in Freiburg since 2021. Her declared goal is to make Freiburg even more liveable and lovable. In order to prepare the city for climate change and reduce heat spots, she is committed, among other things, to more urban greenery and an open, liberal and tolerant urban community that faces the major challenges together.
