On November 19, 2024 at 8 p.m. we will be showing Jennifer Abbott’s The Magnitude of All Things, the second film in our series on climate protection, at Harmonie Kino Freiburg.

The Magnitude of All Things explores the concept of climate grief – the grief over the loss of the animals, landscapes and ecosystems devastated by climate change – by connecting Abbott’s emotional reaction to her sister’s death from cancer with her emotional reactions to climate change. Stories from the front lines of climate change merge with memories of the filmmaker’s childhood in Ontario. What do these stories have in common? The answer, surprisingly, is: everything.

This visually stunning cinematic journey takes us around the world to witness a planet in crisis: from the fires in Australia and the Great Barrier Reef to the island nation of Kiribati, threatened by rising sea levels.

Coming to terms with the reality of climate change requires more than just words and gestures. When hope is lost, the real emotional work of dealing with climate change begins.

Our conversation partner for the film is the psychologist and psychotherapist Verena Heidenreich, chairwoman of the regional group Psychologist4Future Freiburg

The film is shown in the original English with English subtitles. Admission is free, registration via the VHS is required.

As an accompanying event to the film, Verena Heidenreich is offering a workshop on the topic “Out of powerlessness and helplessness – into the Symbiocene” at the Freiburg Adult Education Center on December 4, 2024 as part of the Visions of Sustainability project. Registration via the VHS is necessary.
